Configuring Alternate WiFi Security Settings MG8725 / MT8733

Your MG8725 / MT8733 gateway comes pre-configured with WPA2-PSK wireless security and AES encryption, which offers robust protection for your network. However, older devices may not support this security mode. If you encounter compatibility issues with older devices, you may need to enable WPA-PSK wireless security. Follow these steps to adjust the settings:

Enabling WPA-PSK Security

To enable WPA-PSK security on your MG8725 / MT8733 gateway, perform the following steps on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands:

  1. Log In to the Configuration Manager:
    • Open a web browser on a computer connected to your gateway.
    • Enter http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar.
    • Log in using the username "admin" and the unique password found on the label under the MG8725 / MT8733.
    • Click the Login button.
  2. Access Advanced Settings:
    • You will be directed to the Basic Status and Settings page.
    • Click the Advanced button in the upper right corner.
  3. Navigate to Wireless Security Settings:
    • You will be brought to the Status > Software page
    • Select the Wireless menu item, then choose the WPS_RADIUS submenu.
  4. Enable WPA2-PSK:
    • Locate the WPA2-PSK Security Settings tab.
    • If WPA2-PSK is not enabled, select Enabled from the WPA2-PSK dropdown menu.
    • Click Save.
  5. Enable WPA-PSK:
    • Find the WPA-PSK Security Settings tab.
    • Select Enabled from the WPA-PSK dropdown menu.
    • Click Save.
  6. Set Encryption Type:
    • Under Encryption, ensure AES is selected.
    • Click Save.
  7. Finalize Configuration:
    • Your device will now operate in mixed WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK mode, ensuring compatibility with both older and newer devices on your network.

About Wireless Security

  • WPA and WPA2: These protocols require a Pre-Shared Key (PSK) and provide different levels of security (TKIP for WPA-PSK and AES for WPA2-PSK).
  • Configuration Options: You can enable WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, or both simultaneously to accommodate various device capabilities.
  • Default Settings: By default, the MG8725 uses WPA2-PSK with AES encryption.
  • Device Compatibility: Verify device compatibility with WPA2 networks through user manuals or manufacturer websites under Security, Encryption, Setup, or Advanced Features.

By following these steps, you can ensure your wireless network remains secure while supporting connectivity for all devices in your environment

Verifying Client Support for WPA2

To ensure compatibility with WPA2 on your network, follow these steps to check if your devices support this security standard:

  1. Check Device Manuals:
    • Refer to the user manual of each device to verify if it supports connecting to a WPA2 network.
    • Look for information under sections like Security, Encryption, Setup, or Advanced Features.
  2. Check Configuration Software:
    • Use the configuration software installed on each device to check for WPA2 support.
    • Navigate through menus related to Security, Encryption, Setup, or Advanced Features to find relevant settings.

By confirming WPA2 compatibility for all devices, you can ensure seamless connectivity and optimal security across your network.

Configuring Wireless Security for a RADIUS Server

If you are using a RADIUS server in your network environment, follow these steps to configure wireless security settings without using a Pre-Shared Key (PSK):

  1. Access Wireless Security Settings:
    • Log in to the Configuration Manager of your MG8725 / MT8733 gateway using a web browser.
    • Navigate to http://192.168.0.1 and log in with the username "admin" and the unique password found on the label under the MG8725 / MT8733.
    • Click the Login button and access the Advanced Settings.
  2. Disable WPA-PSK and Enable WPA2:
    • Locate the WPA-PSK Security Settings tab.
    • If WPA-PSK is enabled, select Disabled from the WPA-PSK dropdown menu and click Save.
    • If WPA2-PSK is enabled, select Disabled from the WPA2-PSK dropdown menu and click Save.
    • Select Enabled for WPA2. Do not save yet.
  3. Configure RADIUS Server Settings:
    • Enter the RADIUS Server Address and click Save.
    • Enter the RADIUS Port and click Save.
    • Enter the RADIUS Key and click Save.
  4. Optional: Enable WPA:
    • If desired, select Enabled for WPA and click Save.
  5. Set Encryption Type:
    • Under Encryption, if WPA or both WPA and WPA2 are enabled, select AES+TKIP.
    • If only WPA2 is enabled, select AES.
    • Click Save to apply the changes.

By configuring these settings, your network will utilize the enhanced security of WPA and WPA2 authentication without the need for a Pre-Shared Key, ensuring efficient and secure connectivity across all devices.
